Shadow work

Shadow work- the practice of acknowledging, facing, engaging, and integrating what we have turned away from, disowned, or otherwise rejected in ourselves—is not significantly taken into account in religion and most spiritual paths, especially those that marginalize or insufficiently address the psychological and emotional dimensions of experience. None of this is to say that religion and spirituality should be doing the job of psychology, but that they need to be more in touch with and supportive of practices like shadow work.
P. 43 Spiritual Bypassing by Robert Augustus Masters, Phd 2010 North Atlantic Books, Berkley, California

This book is saying things I have observed in my own sociological experiments by immersing myself
in the new age electronica subculture and closely working with hundreds of indivuduals, one on one, young to old. It is important to note that I am not discounting spirituality, or the practices involved with spirituality, it is a area that is wide open, although at the same time I can’t help but notice how fast it is growing, which begs the question, are we collectively fast tracking to a place of ‘feel good’ and simply forgetting or ‘not dealing with’ the very things we are moving forward from? Ever wonder why the ‘dark side’ is commonly seen or depicted with such disdain and negativity? The search continues…

  1. Good reminders. Thank you, and namaste. 🙂

    • Thanks for reading the blog, I enjoy writing and sharing my thoughts and other’s thoughts I come across. The world is such an interesting place, and I really enjoy looking at it through different angles, this is something I appreciate and I am grateful for, including the fact I live somewhere where I have the freedom to do so.

  2. Thank you for sharing! I’m a college lecturer interested in Jungian psychology. I work with my shadow in order to improve both my teaching practice and student behaviour. I have converted my shadow dialogues into a series of animations which are available on my website http://www.gavinboyd.com Here is a dialogue with my inner rebellious teenager. Healing this part of my shadow had a positive impact in the classroom. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYL9EeBNUdM

    • Thanks for checking out the Mahaloness, I watched the video on your about page, I relate very well, nicely done. I see dark, I paint light and quite often on my art pilgrimage I work with those who are lost in their shadow. Keep up the good work.
