Painting forward.

One of many influences on my career and living modus operandi, was and still is Hunter S. Thompson.

Some words on Hunter, life, and seeing it through.

Here I sit, with myself, writing, exploring thoughts, surrounded by all of my work, gripped by a familiar feeling about the world I live in, this theatre, the one captured so well by the likes of Hemmingway, Fitzgerald, and Hunter S. Thompson. To the right, my brain, points of reference, signs, messages, the voices of our time, memorabilia, and behind me? Well there’s a painting called ‘Lovechild’ on the wall. To the left, my body of work, and things I like to do, the antidote to the absurd, my legacy as I pass through this lifetime. When HST passed we lost a voice that prepared me for the times, he expressed sentiments of this world that doesn’t make a lot of sense most of the time. The fear runs deep. I came across HST once upon a time when I was in university, I found his words useful, unlike most of the textbooks I was being asked to digest. HST wrote books for the likes of me, a young, impressionable lad, on the great search, hungry for a different point of view, what a smart man he was. HST introduced me to the weird, the strange, and was a voice that affirmed to me that this world I live in is full of insanity, yet magical if one just opened their eyes. Corruption runs deep, it seems, from individual, all the way through to our government, even though the establishment has impressed upon me that I am lucky to be ‘free’ thanks to homeland security. I went through the schools, and fought with what they wanted me to know. To question the authority led to being talked down to and made to believe in inferiority. The food chain. I have worked within this system, trying to make money, giving money to my country, asking what’s in it for me, while finding myself broke. To sell work in order to make ends meet ends, and being told what my worth is, and so it goes, again, and again. What love? I will not live the myth that society wants me to. Listen to your voice, trust it, and do what you love to do, in grace, forgive, but don’t just forget, see it through with eyes of compassion, hold your own and be kind. I think this is what it takes to see through the gloom and the doom.

Quotes to go with my sentiments.

“People use the word ‘justice’ to rationalize their abuse of one another” -Quantm Psychology: Robert Anton Wiilson, 1990

‘The tears I shed yesterday have become rain.’ -a Boddhisatva once said

‘The people that don’t do it, have to be told’ (Bill Murray: Buy the Ticket, take the Ride- Hunter S. Thompson).

‘When the road bends why go straight?’ -gypsy proverb

Fotomahaloness -the stuff that makes me tick and the room where I sit and write, paint, sing, meditate, work and play.

Author: hälts

Hi my name is hälts, I am a Canadian artist, geographer, film worker and mostly a human being. I did not grow up thinking I wanted to be an artist, things just kind of fell into place. Art is a special gift humans have developed since inception. Mother Earth is the greatest artist, and who keeps me humble on my path. I mostly paint, and use acrylic with an assortment of brushes and touches, and sometimes watercolour. I am also well rounded with airbrush skills, spray paint, digital art and production, filmmaking, photography and drawing. I make fine art work, small paintings, big paintings, murals, wearable art, functioning art, and art for healing. I go wherever calls. I inspire while also being inspired by this planet, and my fellow beings. Life is a gift, and that's how I treat it. If that's not enough for you, then perhaps someone else can fill your expectation. I have no one to impress, I don't do this to be cool, and I care about this planet as much as Greta Thunberg, thank you very much, and all the life it sustains. I am not pro this person or that person, politically agnostic, I am spiritual, I am happy, I am sad, I am love, I am fear, I am joy, I am sorrow, I am all that humans are. I don't care about celebrities endorsements, and reminder there are many folk out there doing their part for Mother Earth, in their own way long before the current movement, upheaval does not create forever change, it goes in cycles, it always has and it always will, just sit in front the ocean and see it for yourselves. Most of all I just am. Thank you kindly, hälts

  1. Hunter is the man!!! I was lucky enough to see him speak in Aspen right after when those planes when caboom into those buildings. The curse of lono was the first hst book I read and then hells angels. All I remember from that speech was a bunch of mumbling and pointing, he even started a random dialogue with someone in the crowd. I laughed, chuckled and then missed out on the opportunity to shake his hand, but his spirit sure won’t die in me. I doubt he believed in yolo too, I would wager a suitcase full of salt shakers that he just wanted to do some intergalactic travel.

    • Excellent! Yes indeed, the monument built for his funeral out at Owl’s nest, designed by HST and Ralph Steadman was and is still way ahead of its time, as was his writing, without a doubt in my mind the double thumbed peyote holding fist monument is an intergalactic spacetime travel device, I must get there as soon as possible!
